GUIDELINES FOR VISITING MEDICAL STUDENTS
|
Southern
Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU-SOM) welcomes senior students from
other institutions accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to participate in fourth-year
elective study. Application may
also be considered from students enrolled in foreign institutions with which
SIU-SOM has a standing clinical electives exchange program. To be
approved for elective study at SIU-SOM, a visiting medical student must be in
good academic standing, have successfully completed the equivalent of any
prerequisites listed for the desired course prior to actually participating in
the elective experience, be covered by personal health and malpractice
insurance, and provide documentation of required immunizations. Students
enrolled in approved foreign medical colleges:
In addition to the above, students enrolled in foreign medical colleges
with an established clinical electives exchange program must be in the
equivalent of our senior (final) year of training.
If approved for elective study, students will be enrolled in the
specific elective course(s) only, not enrolled in the medical school.
We also require that foreign students provide information regarding
their proficiency in the English language. Students may
apply for visiting student status at any time, but enrollment decisions for
visiting students will be made following registration and the open enrollment
period for SIU-SOM students; usually early to mid-June. Please note:
All paperwork must be submitted three weeks prior to the beginning of
the elective experience. SIU-SOM has
no “official housing” available for visiting medical students.
The student will be responsible for travel and living expenses.
There are no fees or tuition charged to visiting medical students. If a student
accepted for elective study at SIU-SOM must cancel participation in the course
for any reason, the Registrar in the Office of Student Affairs should be
notified in writing as soon as possible. Direct inquiries to: Jennifer Langley, BS, Registrar Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Office of Student Affairs PO Box 19624 Springfield, IL
