Description:
This elective is designed for students entering the field of OB/GYN and is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to successfully begin their PGY 1 year residency. The rotation will last two weeks and the students will engage in small group exercises, independent study, cadaver dissection, and skills training in the SIU Surgical Skills Laboratory.
*The course is very work intensive and absences are strongly discouraged.

**SPECIAL NOTE: Students will not be allowed time off on Thursday afternoons for extended electives.**

Objectives:
1. Perform the following surgical skills at the proficiency level of a PGY 1 resident: episiotomy repair, basic laparoscopy, foley catheter insertion, repair of a complex and simple wound, colposcopy, performance of a focused history and physical, and dictate an operative note.
2. Demonstrate a knowledge level equivalent to a PGY 1 resident in the following fundamental areas: anatomy, endocrinology, wound care, infection, ultrasonography, fetal heart rate tracing interpretation, and evaluation of abnormal pap smears.
3. Demonstrate adequate knowledge and skills in the following content areas: critical appraisal of the literature, ethical treatment of patients, counseling patients on disease prevention and risks of procedures.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy equivalent to a PGY1

Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on the following bases:
1. Evaluation will be assessed using direct observation and written examinations.
2. Formative feedback will be provided throughout the elective and a summative evaluation will be reviewed with the student on the last day of the elective.

Prerequisites:
Successful completion of ALL third-year clerkships
