Description: |
| The elective is designed to introduce the student to the evaluation and treatment of sub-fertile couples. Educational opportunities will range from evaluations in the clinic, operating theater, and in vitro fertilization procedures. The student will attend clinic to understand the initial work-up, the process of the ovulation induction and full process of vitro fertilization. The latter will include experience in the andrology and embryo laboratory. The student will be able to follow surgical patients from admission until their follow-up in the outpatient clinic. The student will attend all appropriate conferences such as REI Journal Club (which meets every other week at noon) and daily clinical meetings. A rotation in a male fertilty clinic in the department of urology will also be included. |

Objectives: |
Upon completion of this elective, the student will be able to :
1. Demonstrate familiarity with the baseline evaluation of the sub-fertile couple.
2. Understand the medical and surgical approaches to the sub-fertile couple.
3. Demonstrate basic medical knowledge of neurophysiology, endocrinology, and gynecology to determine the diagnosis of patients presenting with sub-fertility.
4. Understand the treatment options for controlled ovarian hyperstimulation.
5. Understand and be able to perform semen analysis and swim up techniques for intra-uterine inseminations.
6. Become familiar with the laboratory techniques associated with cutting edge Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
7. Begin to develop the clinical tools to perform the:
a. Basic history and physical
b. Monitor controlled ovarian hyperstimulation
c. Surgical skills necessary for the treatment of sub-fertility |

Evaluation: |
1. Attendance at required clinical and surgical activities
2. Presentations both oral and written
3. Appropriate professionalism during rotation
4. Review of the relevant literature
5. Students will be required to maintain a logbook of patient encounters |

| Successful completion of Obstetrics / Gynecology clerkship |
