Description
:
The Breastfeeding and Medicine rotation is designed to teach the student the basics of assessing and handling breastfeeding problems of the mother and infant. Students will spend 80% of time in the elective with a certified lactation consultant at Memorial Medical Center in clinic experience. The student will see both outpatients and inpatients at MMC Dept of OB with the lactaction consultant. 20% of their time will be spent with one or more of the faculty responsible for the elective presenting their H&Ps on both the mother and infant seen in the outpatient clinics. The students will also present the mothers and infants seen in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Students will research a breastfeeding topic and present to course faculty.

Objectives
:
The following objectives for this elective are from the Wellstart International program Lactation Management Self-Study Modules.
1. Describe the general benefits of breastfeeding for the infant, mother, family, and community at large.
2. Identify factors that contribute to the breastfeeding decision.
3. Counsel a woman about the benefits of breastfeeding.
4. Describe the process of milk production and removal.
5. Recognize correct attachment and effective suckling at the breast.
6. Identify components of anticipatory guidance for all women.
7. Recognize the impact of perinatal hospital practices on breastfeeding.
8. Discuss the causes and prevention of common breastfeeding problems.
9. Recognize that infants and mothers with special health care needs can breastfeed.
10. Recommend treatment options compatible with breastfeeding.
11. Recognize when and how lactation can be sustained during mother/infant separation.

Evaluation
:
1. Satisfactory completion of H&P and/or progress notes on all mothers and infants seen in the outpatient clinic.
2. Satisfactory presentation of all these H&Ps to one or more of the faculty involved in the elective.
3. Satisfactory presentation of all outpatient mothers and infants to one of the faculty involved in this elective.
4. Active participation in inpatient and outpatient rounds.
5. The student will maintain a logbook of all patient encounters.
6. Present topic to faculty.

:
Successful completion of the following clerkship(s): Obstetrics/Gynecology and Pediatrics
