Medical Care and Education in Japan (WPI)*

Description:

This course, lasting from 2-4 weeks (per student request) will allow students to experience first hand what medical care, and medical education, are like in Japan (Aichi Medical School in Nagoya). Students will be allowed to observe Japanese physicians caring for patients, as well as meet and talk to medical students in all 6 years of medical school in order to see the similarities and differences of both clinical medicine and medical education in Japan.

**SPECIAL NOTE: STUDENTS WILL NOT BE OFFICIALLY ENROLLED UNTIL APPROVED BY THE DEAN OF STUDENT AFFAIRS.**

Objectives:

1. Students will become familiar with the medical care offered at one medical school in Japan.
2. Students will become familiar with the medical education as it is offered at Aichi University in Nagoya.
3. Students will be able to compare and contrast how medical care and medical education differ between the US and Japan.

Evaluation:

1. Direct observation (by Japanese coordinators)
2. Written essay of objective #3 above

Prerequisites:

*WPI (With Permission of Instructor) faculty approval required to enroll
*This is a competitive elective- only one or two students will be awarded this elective per year. As such, Dr. Klamen must be informed about a student's wish to apply for this elective by MAY 1 of the academic year before the wished time period (e.g., May 1, 2007 for a rotation that would occur between July 2007 and April 1, 2008). The awardee will be notified 30 days after the May 1st deadline for the given year.
*Students accepted must go to Japan by the end of March in the year following acceptance (due to Japan's budgetary needs).
*Completion of orientation with Dr. Constance SIX WEEKS ahead of time as required for all mission trip electives (This would involve completion of required documents, travel insurance, immunizations, etc.)
*The exact content of the elective will be arranged between the student and faculty at Aichi.
