| This course will provide the student with experience in serving the health care needs of individuals in a developing country. PIMS is a medical school located in a rural community outside of Karimnagar, a small town in Southern India. It is similar to SIU as it is dedicated to providing a primary care based education to students who will ultimately serve the indigenous population.
Students will work cooperatively with physicians and local medical students in both a government hospital and a university hospital. Students will round with physicians, examine patients as appropriate, perform histories, and attend lectures. Each student will pay for transportation; however, housing and food will be provided by PIMS. |

Objectives: |
|
| 1. Become familiar with the relevant health needs of the region and how they compare to those of Southern Illinois patient population.
2. Document the main causes of morbidity/mortality as well as current issues in health care delivery. 3. Become educated in common infectious diseases endemic to the region (Malaria and subtypes, Dengue, HIV/AIDS) and treatments that are accessible to patients. 4. Research ways in which to assess, diagnose, and treat these common conditions without easily accessible laboratory and imaging facilities. 5. Develop an understanding of health literacy, patient education, and the impact of both on patient safety and public health. 6. Design communication tools necessary to present health information to varied audiences, taking into account cultural, linguistic, and health literacy levels. 7. Understand appropriate responses to the cultural and linguistic needs of patients. 8. Collect data on number of patients seen, presenting complaints, diagnosis, risk factors, education/social history, and barriers to health care utilization in the pediatric population. 9. Synthesize data into a working document for future medical students to utilize when preparing to take this elective in the future. |

Evaluation: |
|
| 1. Student will be evaluated based on clinical performance by the physician in charge of the program at PIMS.
2. Students will maintain a patient log. 3. Student will submit a report describing the experience and making notes and suggestions for future students. |

Prerequisites: |
|
| 1.*WPI (With Permission of Instructor) faculty approval is required to enroll.
2. This is a competitive elective; a maximum of two students may enroll during each rotation. Students who wish to apply must meet with the responsible faculty at least 4 months in advance of the anticipated rotation date. 3. Student must have successfully completed all Year 3 Clerkships. |
